It was extremely discouraging to read this week that a Muslim man's car was vandalized and a racist note left behind.
The man's car was parked at a midtown apartment complex when the windshield was smashed and three tires were slashed.
A note taped to the rear window read "You are not welcome here!! Go home you stupid (expletives)!!" According to police, this is the second reported hate crime directed at a Muslim in Tucson this year.
The victim is an American citizen who was born in Jordan. He is one of us.
Come on, Tucson, we're better than that. The hate-filled individual who did this does not speak for the rest of us.
Like mother, like son
John McCain has developed a reputation for telling people how to behave. But there is one person who tells him how to behave: his mother.
Roberta McCain, 93, spent this week in New York City, where her son spoke at the Republican National Convention. And she has become almost as famous and recognized as her Arizona senator son.
In an interview this week, Sen. McCain mentioned a book he wrote about his 5 1/2 years as a POW in Vietnam. In the book, he described times when he yelled curse words at his guards, who didn't understand English.
His mother called John, telling him, "Johnny, I'm going to come over there and wash your mouth out with soap."
"But Ma, these were bad people."
"I don't care," she said.

Better late than never
What took so long?That's what Southeast Side residents may be asking after Davis-Monthan Air Force Base officials apologized this week for teargassing them - six months ago.
Feb. 25, a small amount of tear gas drifted from a training drill on the base into Rita Ranch. Six people were treated for exposure to gas, and others panicked, believing there was a terrorist attack.
This week, Col. Michael Spencer, 355th Wing commander, issued a statement saying, "We ... sincerely regret the alarm this incident caused our friends in Rita Ranch."
The apology came so late because of an investigation to ensure such an incident does not happen again, officials said.
That's good and necessary. But an apology doesn't need to be delayed for completion of an investigation.
Light up? Pay up
It's hardly the crime of the century, but state revenuers are keeping an eye out for scofflaws who buy cigarettes online.
A new Arizona law imposes stiff fines on people who do not pay state sales tax when buying and selling cigarettes by mail-order or over the Internet.
This is a significant amount of money - for taxpayers and for smokers.
The state believes it lost $12 million last year because of untaxed cigarettes sales. And Arizona taxes cigarettes at $1.18 per pack - the 10th highest in the nation.
One more reason to kick the habit.

And we would be remiss if we did not note that this evening a new era - the Mike Stoops era - begins at Arizona Stadium.
