When it
comes to the priorities of life, they spend more cash on booze than anything
else except rent.
That adds up to a staggering £940 million spent on alcohol
by students every single year - good news for the pubs and bars on Ecclesall
Road and West Street.
And health really isn't a top priority - as shown by
the annual spend on cigarettes at £480 million.
But Sheffield is still good
value as a student city, ranked in the top ten of the Student Living index
produced by the Royal Bank of Scotland.
Self-catered digs can still be had
for as little as £35 a week - though rooms at Hallam University can set an
undergraduate back as much as £120.
Part-time work isn't difficult to find
and the cost of a pint is cheaper than most parts of the country.
Sheffield
ranks ninth in RBS' value for money survey, with Glasgow cheapest and Durham and
Bristol most expensive.
But most students gave little or no thought to living
costs when they chose their university, the survey discovered.
Chris Franc,
student union president at Sheffield Hallam University, said students still
regarded the city as good value for money.
"The real advantage is that there
is a real variety of accommodation available from very cheap up to the higher
end," Chris said.
"And students coming here know it's a fantastic city for
going out - with loads of clubs, bars and restaurants.
"I's also a compact
city to get around with excellent transport links, which is also a real plus,"
Chris said.
Chris said the amount of money spent on socialising, beer and
cigarettes did seem high.
"But this is a time of
transition between home and the real world," he said.
