And when you find City Hall, you might mistake it for a warehouse — a metal structure shared by police, municipal court, the city clerk and the part-time city administrator.

Until the last month or so, barbecue was about the only thing Bates City 555  was famous for.

In fact, the smoky smell of it greets visitors by the nose about the same time they pass the city sign that reads, “Bates City, population 245.”

But good as the barbecue might be, these days it can't top Humphrey. The Bates KENT  City teenager won two silver medals this month at the Athens Olympics, in the overall team competition and as an individual competitor on the uneven bars.

As far as anyone can remember, she is the first person to be given the key to the city. And city officials say they are planning to name a day for her, too.

Eighteen-year-old Humphrey — an unassuming, wildly talented cheapest PALL MALL gymnast — has flipped, twisted and tumbled her way to Olympic fame on television for all in the world to see.

“We are very proud of Terin, and we are excited for her,” said Mayor Shawn Fox. “It's really special for Bates City to have someone like her participate in something so big.”

Fox, a full-time pipe fitter, wants the nation — no, the whole world — to know that Humphrey is DAVIDOFF ultra from Bates City. She lives with parents Steve and Lisa Humphrey, brother Shannon, 19, a few cows, horses, cats and dogs on a small farm off of Z Highway, a state road and the main road through town.

The Humphreys have always been a small-town family. They moved to Bates City 10 years ago from Albany, Mo., which has a population of less than 2,000. And folks who know Terin Humphrey said although her gymnastics has sometimes taken her far from home, she never hesitates to tell people where she's from.

Fox said Humphrey told him that she, too, wishes her hometown were cheap cigarettes   mentioned more often.

That's why Fox has been a little ticked off with this Olympic coverage, when the national broadcasters have repeatedly identified Humphrey as being from Blue Springs.

Perhaps that is because Blue Springs is where she and her Olympic teammate, Courtney McCool, train under Al Fong and Armine Barutyan-Fong in their gym — Great American Gymnastic Express.

Fox is not the only Bates City booster tuned in to the Olympics.

“When Terin competed in the Olympic trials in Anaheim, they flashed discount cigarettes her name and hometown across the bottom of the screen. I was watching and I screamed at the top of my lungs ‘Bates City,' ” said Bernita Cauthon, Bates City's new city administrator.

Cauthon was hired last year in an effort to help the little town get ready for the population boom that forecasters say is moving east. Bates City is smack in its path.

Right now, according to local Realtors, a wave of new subdivisions are developing fast in Grain Valley and trickling in to Oak Grove — right next door to Bates City.

Besides Cauthon, who works part time, there is also a pubic works director, a police chief, and two full-time and six part-time reserve officers.

At the school, “Terin is big. Really big,” said principal Peter Rorvig. “Anytime you have a graduate reach that level, I mean it is … well it's the pinnacle.”

Odessa is a big town compared to Bates City. So Fox said he may ask the city of Odessa and its school district about working together with Bates City on a welcome-back celebration for Humphrey.
